Gérald Genta designed the Royal Oak, the Nautilus, the Ingenieur SL, the Pasha, and the Bulgari Bulgari, but from 1969 onward he also produced watches under his own name, for clients who wanted the designer’s vision without the filter of another brand’s identity.
The watches produced under the Gérald Genta name were made in small quantities, finished to a standard that reflected the man’s own taste rather than a corporation’s production targets, and sold through a restricted network of retailers.
The ref. G1336.2 is a rectangular tank-form watch in tri-or, a case construction using three colours of 18kt gold: red, white, and yellow. The three metals are layered concentric around the dial, polished to a shine. The tri-or technique requires the goldsmith to work three alloys with different melting points into a single case, a jewellery-grade operation.
The case measures 26 × 28.5 mm and is in excellent condition, it shows only light traces of use and it is correctly signed and numbered. The sapphire crystal is perfect. The crown is original.
The silver, intense grey, brushed dial with bold Roman numerals at 12 and 6 and baton indices is in excellent condition. The hands are original.
The movement is the Frédéric Piguet Calibre 21, an ultra-thin hand-wound ébauche proven across decades of use by Piaget, Vacheron Constantin, Cartier, and Blancpain among others. It has been serviced and is running strong.
The Frédéric Piguet Calibre 21 was designed in 1925 by Henri-Louis Piguet at Le Brassus in the Vallée de Joux. It measures 20.4 mm in diameter (9 lignes) and 2 mm in height, with 18 jewels. It was one of the thinnest hand-wound movements available at the time and remained in production for over eight decades — one of the longest production runs of any Swiss calibre.
The watch is complete with its original strap, gold clasp, and Gérald Genta leather pouch.
