Universal Genève – Compax Automatic Ref. 104.41.980 Automatic Steel & Gold Chronograph – Cal. UG98

Universal Genève introduced the Compax in 1936 as the world’s first wristwatch chronograph to include an hour totalizer — a three-register layout that established the configuration which the entire industry would subsequently adopt.
This ref. 104.41.980 belongs to the Compax series relaunched after Universal Genève’s acquisition by the Stelux Group in 1988 and the opening of a new production facility in Bienne in 1993.

It retains the three-register layout while adapting the design language of the period: a larger 39 mm case, two-tone steel and gold case, and a knurled hobnail “Clous-de-Paris” bezel that gives the watch a strong visual identity at a distance.

The case is stainless steel with gold-coloured pushers, crown, and bezel inserts, and measures 39 mm excluding the original crown. It is in very good condition with only light traces of use. The “Clous-de-Paris” bezel is fixed, with pyramid-cut hobnail finishing and alternating polished gold inserts at the cardinal positions and an inner tachymetre scale.
The logo on the crown tip shows wear. The domed mineral glass is in perfect condition.

The panda dial has Applied gold baton indices mark the hours and the quick-set date is at 3 o’clock. The hands are gold-toned with matching lume plots. The dial is in perfect condition with no patina and no oxidations.
The movement is the Calibre UG 98, Universal Genève’s designation for the Valjoux 7750. The Valjoux 7750 was introduced in 1973/1974, designed by Edmond Capt at Valjoux, it is a self-winding chronograph whose production was halted during the quartz crisis and resumed in the early 1980s, at which point it became the most widely used automatic chronograph base in Swiss watchmaking.

The movement has been serviced in-house and is in good working order.
