Zenith – Chronometre Original 1956 Vintage Automatic 18kt. Red Gold Watch – Cal. 133.8

During the 1950s, few words carried more weight on a dial than “Chronomètre.”

Unlike today, when the term is often associated with marketing, a chronometer represented a measurable technical achievement. Each movement had successfully passed independent precision tests, reflecting a level of adjustment and regulation reserved for the manufacture’s finest production.

Zenith was among the leading names in this field, building on decades of success in international observatory competitions, where the manufacture accumulated more than 2,000 chronometry awards and established its reputation as one of Switzerland’s foremost specialists in precision timekeeping.

This Chronomètre Automatic, produced in 1956 (based on its serial number), belongs to that tradition. Housed in a 37mm 18kt red gold case, it has the classic and well proportioned aesthetic of the era. The case is in a very good condition and only shows light traces of use, the pressure-locked back is correctly signed and numbered

The original dial has aged beautifully, developing a light, even patina that enhances its clean, balanced design. Applied baton indexes and dauphine hands complete this center-seconds dial.

Powering the watch is the Zenith Calibre 133.8, a manufacture bumper automatic movement introduced in the mid-1950s, when automatic winding had become the new technical benchmark.

Zenith approached it with the same philosophy that had earned the manufacture its international reputation in chronometry: precision before complexity. The 133.8 was developed as a robust, finely regulated calibre capable of meeting the demanding standards required for Zenith’s chronometer-grade production.
