This watch predates the Compur by 6 years. The Compur name was registered in 1934; this chronograph, dated by its serial number to 1928, belongs to the early generation of Universal wrist chronographs, single-pusher watches using the 16-ligne calibre, one of the first chronograph movement in Universal’s production.

The pusher is at 6 o’clock, between the lugs, in the position inherited directly from pocket watch chronographs. It is a monopusher: one pusher cycles through start, stop, and reset.

The 16-ligne calibre is the rarest of the monopusher chronograph movements Universal produced, and pre-Compur watches fitted with it survive in smaller numbers than any later Universal chronograph family.

The 18kt gold case with double-hinged construction measures 39.4 mm, a size that in 1920 was reserved for watches that made no pretence of being discreet. The hinges are in perfect working order. The case is in very good condition.

The white enamel dial is original and in excellent condition, no hairlines, no repairs. An intact enamel dial from 1920 is the single most fragile component on a watch of this age: enamel cracks under shock and develops hairlines with thermal stress. That this dial has survived over a century without damage is the detail that defines this watch.

The hands are original. The plexyglass is new.

The Cal. 16¾ has been serviced and is running strong, with all chronograph functions working correctly.

The watch is fitted with a new leather strap.

This watch has been serviced in-house and is in good working order. It is delivered with our six-month guarantee and our originality certificate. Worldwide shipping is available and inquiries are welcome.
