The Tudor Prince-Quartz Oysterdate
The ref. 9140/0 was introduced in 1978 as Tudor’s response to the quartz crisis — and one of the most architecturally distinctive watches the brand has produced. It is the quartz counterpart to the mechanical Tudor ref. 9101, sharing the same case but housing an ESA 940.111 quartz movement.
The design combines a modified Oyster case body with an oversized fluted bezel, a chapter ring (rehaut) surrounding the dial, and an integrated bracelet with heavy, angular links — a combination that gives the watch significant a presence and visual weight.
At 38 mm, it was among the larger watches in the Tudor range at the time.
The Watch
This Tudor Prince-Quartz Oysterdate ref. 9140/0 in stainless steel is in a good, lightly used condition. The 38 mm case retains its original finish. The Rolex-signed screw-down crown is original. The original acrylic crystal with Cyclops is also original and in a very good condition.
Based on the serial number, this watch dates to 1980
The silvered dial with applied baton indices and date at 3 o’clock is in very good condition — it shows a slight and even patina. The rehaut is partially faded. The hands are original.
The movement is the ESA 940.111 quartz. Battery is new.
The ESA 940.111 was introduced in 1976 as the first calibre in the “Flatline” quartz family — a joint development between André Beyner of Ebauches SA and Anton Bally of ETA. At 3.7 mm in height, it was the thinnest industrially produced quartz movement in the world at the time of its release. It was deliberately designed to share the same dimensions as the ETA 2892 automatic mechanical movement — the two were intended to be interchangeable, and many of their mechanical components (calendar mechanism, wheel train) are identical.
The watch is complete with its original Tudor ref. 9585 stainless steel integrated bracelet, with an overall length of 20 cm.
