Rolex Datejust Ref. 6305-1 Left-Handed “Ovettone”
This Rolex Datejust Ref. 6305-1 is a rare and intriguing timepiece that holds a significant place in the history of Rolex and of watch collecting. Known as the “Ovettone” (Italian for “big egg”) or “Big Bubble Back” due to its distinctively domed case back, this model is unique for its left-handed crown configuration. Introduced in the early 1950s, this variant represents a rare interpretation of the iconic Datejust design.
Launched in 1945 to commemorate Rolex’s 40th anniversary, the Datejust was the world’s first self-winding wristwatch with an automatically changing date function displayed in a window at 3 o’clock. Over time, it became one of Rolex’s flagship models, embodying the brand’s commitment to innovation and elegance.
The Datejust Ref. 6305, produced in the early 1950s, was part of the “Ovettone” family, an engineering requirement to house the higher-standing automatic rotor.
Rolex has consistently considered the preferences and needs of left-handed watch enthusiasts. During the era of this model, Rolex offered left-handed versions of the Datejust as special-order models, catering to a niche but dedicated audience.
However, only a limited number of these “Lefty” Datejust watches appear to have been delivered, as only a few examples have surfaced over the years. These more commonly include variants in stainless steel and two-tone steel and gold, and fewer in solid gold, like this particular example. Its rarity makes it a highly sought-after piece among collectors.
This specific Ref. 6305-1 has an 18kt gold case measuring 36mm, without counting the original crown, with a fluted bezel—a hallmark of Datejust’s design.
The left-hand crown placement makes this watch a rare collector’s piece. The original plexiglass crystal remains intact, preserving the vintage aesthetic and the overall case finish is sharp.
At the heart of this Datejust is the automatic Caliber A.296, a robust and precise movement that played a crucial role in Rolex’s evolution. Introduced in the late 1940s, this movement was an advancement over its predecessors, offering improved reliability and efficiency.
Its importance lies in being part of Rolex’s lineage of self-winding mechanisms, which cemented the brand’s reputation for technical excellence. This particular watch has been serviced and is in good working condition, backed by a six-month guarantee.
As a particularity, this movement has turned to a very attractive dark brown color, so taht during the servicing we have hand washed the movement avoiding the use of the usual liquids which would have turned the movement to its original silvered color
The watch is complete with original “Officially Certified Chronometer” black dial, a rarity for this reference. The dial has its arrow-pint hour markers and the iconic “roulette” date, alternating between red and black numerals. The dial’s condition shows only very light signs of age, adding to its vintage charm and authenticity.
The watch is fitted with a new crocodile strap, paired with a Rolex solid gold clasp.
We are including additional photographs of this watch to highlight its rarity, warranting closer study. These detailed images of the components have allowed us to confirm the complete originality of this timepiece.
The case is uniquely designed to accommodate the left-hand crown. The dial, originally intended for the right-hand model, has been repositioned using additional holes drilled in the movement ring to align the date display at 9 o’clock. This adjustment was necessary because the dial feet are not symmetrical.
The date disc differs from that of the right-hand version due to a distinct number print angle. If this original dial were placed in the standard right-hand position, the date window would not align correctly.
Additionally, the serial numbers and reference positions have been inverted, with the reference now located at 6 o’clock and the serial at 12 o’clock. Note also the “Patent” engraving.
All these details unequivocally demonstrate that this is not a right-hand watch adapted for left-hand use but an authentic left-hand design from its inception
This Rolex Datejust Ref. 6305-1 represents a quite unique piece of horological history, ideal for collectors seeking rare and unconventional Rolex models.
