This Piaget Ref. 9156, produced in the 1970s, is a rare and elegant ultra-thin tank-style wristwatch, distinguished by its original wood dial, it is in an excellent condition and just serviced. Wood dials represent one of the more experimental and visually distinctive directions taken by luxury watchmakers during the 1970s, and Piaget was among the few to fully embrace this aesthetic. At a time when the brand was known for its creative use of materials—ranging from lapis lazuli and jade to tiger’s eye—Piaget also explored exotic woods such as ebony, birch, and rosewood for its ultra-thin dress watches. These dials were difficult to produce due to the fragility of the wood, which had to be cut to micron-level thickness and bonded to a metal base without cracking or warping. As a result, very few were made, and even fewer have survived in well-preserved condition. Today, Piaget watches with original wood dials—especially in precious white gold cases—are considered rare collector’s items, valued for both their aesthetic uniqueness and the technical challenges involved in their manufacture. This watch has an 18kt white gold case with a birch finish, measuring 23 mm in width (excluding the crown) and 29 mm in length, including the lugs.
The case is in excellent condition, with only light signs of wear. The caseback fits securely and has the correct serial numbers and reference. The watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal, in perfect condition. The original wood dial showcases Piaget’s research into exotic and unique materials and craftsmanship. The dial is well-preserved, with clear printing and markers, and no noticeable discoloration. The natural grain of the wood adds a distinctive character to the watch, reflecting the brand’s innovative spirit during the 1970s. Known for its ultra-thin movements and distinctive designs, Piaget introduced the 9P caliber in 1957, a hand-wound mechanical movement measuring only 2 mm in thickness, which allowed for the creation of elegantly slim timepieces.
