Patek Philippe – Ref. 1289 Steel Calatrava Lady`s Box & Papers Baby Watch – Cal.8“`85

Three things make this Patek Philippe lady`s Calatrava Ref. 1289 a rarity. The first is that it is a ladies’ Calatrava at all — the small hand-wound Calatravas Patek made for women in this period are far less often seen than their male counterparts, and rarely surface in this excellent condition. The second is the metal as ref. 1289 was built almost exclusively in yellow and rose gold; a stainless steel piece is a genuine rarity, steel Patek of any kind from this era being scarce, and a steel ladies’ Calatrava scarcer still.

That it survives complete with its original box and guarantee moves it from rare to exceptional. The guarantee is not dated, but based on the serial numers, this watch dates to the years 1948-1950

The steel case measures 20.5mm, in the pure round Calatrava idiom — smooth bezel, curved lugs, clean lines owing everything to the Bauhaus style the Calatrava was built on. Condition is excellent, the pressure-locked back is fully signed and numbered.

The dial was originally silvered and has, over the decades, turned a soft and even light pink — a natural and entirely undisturbed transformation that gives the watch a special warmth Applied Roman numerals at twelve and six and mirror polished hands. Condition is excellent with no stains or oxidations.

The movement is the Patek Philippe 8‴85, manual wind — the calibre Patek reserved for its smallest watches. Finished to the full manufacture standard the name demands regardless of size. The movement is in an overall excellent condtion , it has been serviced by our in-house watchmaker and is running correctly.

The watch is also fitted with a period-correct new-old-stock steel bracelet, unsigned.
