Omega – Original Ref. 2640-8 Vintage 1954 Waterproof-Style Steel Watch – Cal. 283

Look at the dial under the name: FAB SUISSE. It is short for fabriqué en Suisse, and it is there because French law required imported watches to declare their origin.

So this watch was delivered to France, and it was manufactured in 1954, based on the movement serial number

Beneath it, an original two-tone center-seconds dial that has turned evenly to a warm tropical tan, with applied arrow and numeral indices. The dial is original and unrestored.

The plexy crystal is perfect.

The movement is the Omega calibre 283: 30.5 mm, 17 jewels, 18,000 vibrations an hour, a 45-hour reserve, Incabloc, and a Breguet overcoil hairspring. It belongs to Omega’s 30 mm family, built from 1940 to 1963 — the calibres on which the firm’s reputation for accuracy in this period was made, and still among the most serviceable of their generation.
