This 1940s red gold ruby-dial Movado Calendograf reference R4776 is part of a family of complication triple calendar watches introduced in 1938 and one of Movado’s most significant vintage timepieces, exhibited at the 1940 World’s Fair in New York as well as at the Basel Watch Fairs throughout the 1940s In 1946 while visiting the country after the second world war, Winston Churchill was presented with a Movado Calendograf by the Swiss government as a token of their admiration. The Calendograf line remained in production until 1954. The case is 18kt red gold and measures 31.6mm excluding the original unsigned crown, it is in good condition with only very light traces of use consistent with its age. The caseback locks firmly and has the correct serial and reference numbers and manufacturer markings. The plexiglass crystal is in perfect condition.
The original silvered two-tones dial has one of Movado’s most sought-after configurations with small cabochon rubies serving as hour indices. The dial displays day and month in french. A pointer hand indicates the date on the outer blue track. Gold Arabic numerals mark 12, 2, 4, 8 and 10 positions, six cabochon rubies mark the remaining hours. The small seconds dial is at 6 o’clock. The dial is well-preserved with only a light patima and some smaller oxidations. The movement is the Movado in-house caliber 470, manufactured from 1938 to 1954, with a Breguet hairspring and serving as the base movement for the Calendograf, Celestograf, and Chronograf modules designed by Frederic Piguet. The movement provides 36 hours of power reserve. This watch has been serviced in-house and functions correctly with all calendar operations and timekeeping working properly. The timepiece is fitted with a crocodile strap complete with its original clasp. This watch is delivered with a six-month guarantee and originality certificate. The combination of ruby-set dial, triple calendar complication, and Movado in-house movement places this Calendograf within the specialized collecting category of vintage Swiss complications.
