Description
This watch is a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Lady’s model, dated between 1931-1933, one of the most iconic timepieces in horological history.
The Reverso was introduced in 1931, designed specifically to cater to polo players in British India. The innovation lay in its reversible case, allowing the dial – and the glass – to be protected during sports. The sleek Art Deco design quickly gained popularity, becoming a staple for both men and women. The model reflects the fusion of functionality and elegance, embodying timeless sophistication.
The idea started in 1928 when César de Trey, a passionate polo player and businessman, approached Jacques-David LeCoultre with a challenge: to create a wristwatch that could withstand the rigors of the sport. The result of this collaboration was a revolutionary design by René-Alfred Chauvot that would change the course of watchmaking history, an innovation that combined engineering precision with Art Deco aesthetics.
Between 1928 and 1933, the Reverso underwent key developments to refine its mechanism and aesthetics. The watch debuted in 1931 with a rectangular case with six streamlined grooves and clean lines emblematic of the Art Deco era and which have remained signature of this watch family. The early models were manufactured with the help of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s collaboration with Tavannes, which supplied movements. By 1933, production had stabilized under Jaeger-LeCoultre’s name
This particular example has a steel case with the compact, rectangular design which adheres to the Art Deco aesthetic of the Reverso line. The mechanism of the reversible case remains a hallmark of the design, utilizing a sliding pivot that allows the case to flip.
The case is in a very good unotuched condition, it shows only normal traces of use, and the reversible mechanism works fine. The reverso side shows a nice art-deco engraving of initials
This specific model is part of the first series of Reverso watches manufactured by Jaeger LeCoultre for a short period between 1931 and 1933, and powered by a Tavannes / Lisica cal 050.
These watches are recogniseable by the very clean art-deco dial graphics and hands, by the Reverso signature and by the Patent stamping on the caseback
Powering this early Reverso is the Tavannes / Lisica 050 caliber, a manually wound movement known for its reliability and compact construction. Tavannes Watch Co. was an early partner in creating the movements for Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Reverso models before the brand fully integrated in-house movements. This movement’s historical importance lies in its role in the watch’s pioneering reversible case design.
The black dial watch has aged gracefully, showing a vintage patina that adds character to its appearance. It features clean baton indices and this model`s typical dauphine hands, aligning with the minimalist aesthetic of the era. The “Reverso” branding is prominently displayed.
The glass is the original sapphire one
this watch has matching case serial numbers and it is one of those few examples surviving complete with original dial, hands and crown
The watch is paired with a vintage-style brown lizard strap which complements the steel case and provides a comfortable fit, accentuating the watch’s timeless charm.
This early Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Lady’s model is a rare collector’s piece that encapsulates the innovation and elegance of 1930s horology. Its historical significance and enduring design make it an exceptional addition to any vintage collection.
