This vintage Jaeger-LeCoultre automatic steel watch, ref. 1116, dates to late 1940`s and represents a significant milestone in the brand’s horological history. It houses the Caliber 476, Jaeger LeCoultre’s first automatic movement, introduced in the same year. This watch has a stainless steel case measuring 33.5mm in diameter, excluding the crown. The case is in a very good condition showing only light signs of wear consistent with its age. The snap-on case back fits securely and bears the correct serial numbers and LeCoultre name, confirming its authenticity. The plexiglass crystal is in excellent condition. The original black dial has developed a uniform patina over time, transitioning to a deep, rich brown hue—a phenomenon often referred to as “tropicalization.” The dial has raised Arabic numerals and indices, with center seconds.
The Jaeger-LeCoultre Caliber 476 was introduced in 1946, and it is the manufacture’s first automatic movement. It has a “bumper” winding system, with a semi-circular oscillating weight pivoted back and forth between spring-loaded buffers to wind the mainspring. This design, though later superseded by full-rotor automatics, was appreciated for its robustness and engineering simplicity. This movement has 17 jewels, a frequency of 18,000 vibrations per hour, and delivers a power reserve of approximately 36 hours. Measuring around 11.75 lignes in diameter (about 26.5 mm), Cal. 476 was compact enough for elegant cases yet reliable enough for daily use. Its historical importance lies in the role it played in establishing Jaeger-LeCoultre’s post-war leadership in automatic movement innovation. This watch is fitted with a new leather strap.
