J.W. Benson – Original 1940`s British Barrel-Case Chrono – Cal. Venus 175

This is an original 1940s J.W. Benson chronograph, with a stainless steel barrel- case and powered by a Venus 175 manually wound movement. The watch is in very good original condition and has been fully serviced in-house. J.W. Benson was a prestigious London-based watchmaker and retailer, founded in London by brothers James William and Samuel Suckley Benson. After the dissolution of the partnership in 1855, James William Benson expanded the business significantly, establishing multiple locations including Ludgate Hill, Bond Street, and the Royal Exchange, and launching a steam-powered factory. The firm gained international recognition, exhibiting at major expos and earning Royal Warrants from Queen Victoria and other monarchs.

In addition to timepieces, J.W. Benson produced fine jewellery. The company ceased manufacturing after WWII due to bombing but continued retail operations into the 1980`s, before being acquired by Mappin & Webb. Today, J.W. Benson is best remembered for its elegant and well-crafted watches, prized by collectors as part of Britain’s horological heritage. This chronograph has a 34 mm stainless steel case, measured excluding the original crown. The case shows only minor signs of use and it seems to be unpolished. The pressure-locked steel caseback closes securely.

The plexiglass crystal in excellent condition, free from scratches The original silvered dial is in excellent condition with virtually no patina or oxidations. At the heart of the watch is the Venus Caliber 175, a classic column-wheel chronograph movement known for its reliability and functionality. It has been fully serviced; all chronograph functions start, stop, and reset correctly.
