The ref. 803A is one of IWC’s core dress watch references from the 1960s, a period when the Schaffhausen was still a real manufacture.
This watch is powered by a Cal. C.854, an in-house automatic movement with the Pellaton winding system, a bidirectional winding mechanism patented by Albert Pellaton, IWC’s technical director, in 1950. The Pellaton system uses two pawls operating on a ratchet wheel to wind the mainspring in both directions of rotor rotation. It is mechanically more efficient and more durable than a standard reverser-wheel system, and IWC continued to use the architecture for over six decades, the current Cal. 52000 series still employs a modernised version of the same principle.
The Cal. C.854 has centre seconds and is finished with Côtes de Genève on the rotor and bridges.
The stainless steel case measures 34.8 mm, excluding the original crown. The case is in excellent condition with only light traces of use. The caseback displays a presentation engraving which dates this watch to 1967. The Plexyglass is intact.
The original silvered soleil (sunray) dial with applied baton indices and centre seconds is in perfect condition, it has no time patina and no oxidations. The hands are original.
The movement has been serviced and is running strong and the watch is fitted with a new leather strap.
This watch has been serviced in-house and is in good working order. It is delivered with our six-month guarantee and our originality certificate.
