At the heart of this timepiece lies the IWC caliber 852, the inaugural movement to feature Albert Pellaton’s renowned automatic winding system. This innovative mechanism employs a pawl-based design, allowing for efficient and consistent bidirectional winding of the mainspring.

The IWC caliber 852 is a significant automatic movement introduced in 1952, marking a pivotal advancement in IWC’s horological innovations. This movement was among the first to feature the Pellaton winding system, developed by IWC’s technical director, Albert Pellaton. The Pellaton system employs a pawl-based mechanism that efficiently transfers energy from the rotor to the mainspring, allowing bidirectional winding and reducing wear compared to traditional designs.

The caliber 852 operates at a frequency of 19,800 vibrations per hour and has 21 jewels, providing a power reserve of approximately 42 hours. Its robust construction and reliable performance led to its use in various IWC models, including the early Ingenieur series. Production of the caliber 852 continued until 1958, with an estimated 13,000 movements manufactured during its six-year run.

The introduction of the caliber 852 and its Pellaton winding system solidified IWC’s reputation for technical excellence and innovation in automatic movement design. The movement’s engineering not only enhanced winding efficiency but also contributed to the longevity and durability of IWC’s automatic watches, setting a standard for future developments in the brand’s movement technology.

The original silvered center-seconds dial is very well-preserved, it shows only a very light, barely visible time patina, and some very small traces of use. The dial’s legibility and design remain intact, reflecting the timeless elegance characteristic of IWC’s creations from this era.

This timepiece has undergone a comprehensive in-house service, ensuring it is in good working order. It will be delivered with a six-month guarantee and a certificate of originality. The watch is complete with a new italian black leather strap.
