IWC – Hermet Ref. 308 Oversize Original 1943 Steel Watch – Cal. C.83Inca

The IWC Hermet name derives from “hermetic,” indicating a case construction engineered to seal the movement against dust and humidity. Produced from the late 1930s through mid-1940s in diameters ranging from 31mm to 38mm, these watches had tightly sealed “high-pressure” snap-on casebacks, stepped bezels, and recessed fluted crowns that minimized exposure. This recessed crown configuration created the distinctive profile that distinguished Hermet watches from standard dress watches. The oversized 38mm steel watches are the most sought-after configuration due to relative scarcity and contemporary wearability. The Hermet stamping appeared on casebacks alongside serial numbers, authenticating the hermetic construction that preceded modern screw-down systems. The IWC caliber 83, introduced in 1931, achieved total production of 68,400 movements by 1947.

This 12-ligne (26.5mm) manual-winding movement has a Breguet overcoil hairspring, and a 36-hour power reserve. Movements from 1943 onward had INCA shock protection. This 1943 IWC Hermet oversized is in a very good condition and in a proper working order The original IWC manufacture-grade caliber 83 manual-winding movement keeps accurate time. The movement has been fully serviced by our in-house watchmaker and will be delivered with our Six-month guarantee. The watch has an exceptional dual-dial configuration. It is currently fitted with a professionally restored two-tone black and grey glossy silver-gilt dial — one of the most distinctive configurations seen on Hermet watches. The restored dial is in a near-new condition. Additionally, the timepiece will be delivered with its original silvered two-tone dial showing a light time patina and minor oxidation consistent with 80 years of age. The stainless steel case measures 37.8mm diameter excluding the crown, and has the characteristic Hermet architecture: pressure-locked snap-on caseback with “Hermet” stamping, stepped bezel with alternating polished and brushed surfaces, and recessed crown. The case is in an original and untouched.
