Helbros – Chronograph Original 1940`s Oversized 18kt. Red Gold Chronograph – Cal. Venus 188

Helbros was founded in 1913 in New York by the Helbein brothers and operated a Swiss subsidiary in Geneva from 1918. The firm assembled watches using movements sourced from Swiss ébauche makers — and in this case, the movement is better than usual: a Venus Calibre 188, the chronograph whose architecture would later evolve, through Valjoux, into the 7750 — the most widely produced automatic chronograph movement in history.

The 18kt red gold case measures 37 mm. The case has the light construction typical of “Chronographe Suisse”-era gold chronographs — thin-walled, elegant, robustness is given by the inner metal case rings and back. The case is in very good condition, the 5 o`clock lugs has a bump on the edge, but it does not impact the case resistance. The plexy crystal is new.

The copper-tone dial is immaculate. It is in a condition that is not commonly encountered on chronographs of this age — no oxidation, no patina, no stains. The Arabic numerals and outer tachymeter scale are sharp. This dial alone distinguishes the watch.

The movement is the Venus Calibre 188, a cam-switched reiable chronograph movement. It has been serviced and is running strong, with all chronograph functions operating correctly.

The watch is fitted with a new leather strap.
