Eberhard – Extra-Fort Ref. 1357 Oversized Waterproof-Style Chronograph – Cal. Valjoux 72

Eberhard’s Sport chronographs of the 1960s are central in the brand’s catalogue — not the oversized Extra-Fort, not the precious-metal show pieces, but well-made everyday chronographs built on the best ébauches available and finished a grade above the norm. The leveradges and the bridges on this movement have anglage, the bevelled and polished edges that indicate a higher quality than the price demanded.

The case is pink gold-filled over a steel back — giving the warmth of gold over a durable steel foundation. It measures 38mm excluding the original crown, a generous size for the period, with a screw-down steel caseback and round chronograph pushers. It is in very good condition, showing only minor traces of use and no signs of polishing.

The original silvered dial has aged to a very light even and warm hazelnut tone, with the tachymetre scale on the dial perimeter and the classic three registers. Condition is very good throughout, the printing crisp and there are no stains or oxidations

The movement is the Valjoux 72, manual wind — a column-wheel chronograph with horizontal clutch and 12-hour totalizer, the calibre that set the template for the golden-era chronograph and powered references from Rolex, Heuer and Universal among many others. Serviced and running correctly, starting and resetting.

The plexi crystal is flawless. And the watch is also fitted with a new leather strap.
